Bamboo fargesia nitida Gansu is a decorative plant that has many advantages. Originally from China, it is one of the non-spreading bamboos, it does not produce underground roots that colonize the ground. It thus forms compact and regular clumps, which can reach 2 to 3,50 meters in height. Its canes are bright purple in colour, almost black, and measure between 1 and 2 cm in diameter. Its leaves are also evergreen and velvety, light green. They elegantly cover the canes and fall down in the shape of an umbrella.

Bamboo Gansu is a resistant plant, which tolerates cold well. It can tolerate temperatures down to -23 °C without suffering. It is fast-growing and requires little maintenance. It appreciates neutral and well-drained soils, which remain cool. It does not like drought, which can cause its leaves to turn yellow. It is therefore necessary to make sure to water it regularly, especially in summer and in pots. It likes both shade and partial shade, but avoid exposures that are too sunny.

Bamboo fargesia nitida Gansu is a versatile plant, which can be used in many different ways. It can be used to create screen or windbreak hedges, thanks to its dense and compact foliage. It can also be planted alone or in a group, to bring an exotic touch to the garden. It can also be grown in pots or containers, on a terrace or a balcony. It adapts to all spaces and all styles.

How to plant

Bamboo Gansu is simple to maintain. To install it in the garden, you must dig a hole of at least 50 cm on each side, incorporate potting soil and compost into the removed soil. You must then put the plant in the middle of the hole, making sure that the collar (the base of the canes) is at ground level. Then fill the hole with the soil removed, compacting well around the plant. It should be watered generously after planting, fertilized in the spring and kept the soil cool during the first years.

For pruning (optional), the canes must be pruned to the desired height, respecting the natural silhouette of the plant. Avoid pruning too close or too sharply, so as not to weaken the plant. Dead or damaged canes should also be removed to stimulate new growth. This can be done any time of the year, but it is best done in spring or fall.
