Acer negundo Variegatum, also called Variegated Ash-leaved Maple is a tree remarkable for its bright variegated foliage. Its leaves are composed of three to seven toothed leaflets, irregularly edged with creamy white, some young shoots can be entirely white or tinged with pink. They take on a pretty golden yellow colour in autumn. This maple is also distinguished by its very light green and slightly pruinose bark, especially on the young branches.
Acer negundo Variegatum is native to North America, where it grows in wetlands and along waterways. It has become naturalized in parts of Europe. It is a deciduous tree with an irregular spreading habit. Rapidly growing, it can reach 6 m in height and 5 m in width. It is very hardy and withstands temperatures down to -35°C. It flowers in April, before the leaves appear, producing nectariferous flowers that are pale yellow in females and reddish in males. The fruits are winged samaras grouped in long clusters.
Variegated Ash-leaved Maple is an ideal tree to bring light and contrast to the garden. It can be planted alone, in large beds or in free hedges. It can also be grown in a clump, that is to say in a clump, to form a dense and colourful bush. It pairs well with other evergreen or spring-flowering trees or shrubs. It is a tree that seduces with its originality and beauty throughout the year.
To plant and cultivate the Acer negundo Variegatum, choose a sunny or semi-shaded location, sheltered from strong winds and above all from the sun's scorch. It must be provided with a rich, fresh and well-drained soil, preferably neutral or slightly calcareous. Soils that are too acidic or too dry should be avoided. Planting is best done in spring or fall, by digging a large, deep hole, adding potting soil and compost, and staking the tree firmly. It is necessary to water regularly the first year, then in the event of prolonged drought. It is also necessary to mulch the foot to conserve humidity and limit weeds. Pruning Variegated Ash-leaved Maple is not essential, but dead or troublesome branches can be removed in early winter. You can also prune the tree slightly to encourage the production of young coloured shoots and keep it at a more moderate height, this pruning is done in November. Care should be taken to remove any suckers that may appear under the graft, as they are green and not variegated.
