Description
The Jonkheer van Tets is a popular redcurrant variety known for its earliness, high productivity, and excellent flavour. From late June, it produces long clusters of bright red berries, juicy and tangy.
Originating from the Netherlands, Jonkheer van Tets is a classic and reliable selection of Ribes rubrum. It forms a deciduous, vigorous, upright shrub reaching 1.5 to 1.75 metres in height. Its medium green, trilobed leaves are slightly wrinkled and serrated. This variety is self-fertile, hardy down to –20 °C, and well suited to temperate climates.
Flowering occurs in April, with small greenish nectar-rich flowers that attract bees. Fruits ripen from late June: long clusters of translucent red berries, tangy and aromatic. They are rich in vitamin C, antioxidants, and fibre, ideal for fresh consumption or processing.
Jonkheer van Tets prefers humus-rich, slightly acidic to neutral, moist but well-drained soil. Loosen the soil to 40 cm depth, mix in mature compost, plant slightly deeper than the crown to encourage new shoots. Generously mulch and water thoroughly after planting.
Maintain consistent moisture, especially in summer. Mulching reduces evaporation and supports uniform fruiting.
In winter, remove branches older than three years. Keep 8 to 10 vigorous shoots of various ages to stimulate fruiting on young wood.
Easily propagated by hardwood cuttings in winter or layering in spring.
The redcurrants of Jonkheer van Tets are perfect for jellies, coulis, pies, syrups, and fresh eating. Their tangy flavour is appreciated in desserts and as a complement to savoury dishes.
Good overall resistance. Susceptible to powdery mildew and aphids in confined conditions. Prevent with pruning, air circulation, and mulching.
The Redcurrant Jonkheer van Tets (Ribes rubrum ‘Jonkheer van Tets’)** is a classic and reliable variety, ideal for family orchards and edible gardens. Its earliness allows harvesting from late June of long clusters of juicy red berries, tangy and rich in vitamin C. Hardy and self-fertile, it adapts to various soils as long as they are moist and well-drained. Its spring flowering attracts pollinators, enhancing biodiversity. Easy to grow, it requires annual pruning to renew wood and maintain abundant production. Thanks to its flavour quality, productivity, and natural resistance, Jonkheer van Tets is a dependable choice for both amateur gardeners and small-scale growers.
