Description
Salix gracilistyla Melanostachys has particularly surprising spring surprises. As of March, this willow raises funny black catkins on bright red stems. These plump catkins have coral-colored anthers in the shape of small claws.
It is understandable why the Salix gracilistyla Melanostachys is also known as the “Black Pussy Willow”. A wolf with thin shaggy paws like those of Little Red Riding Hood's wolf! The anthers then become covered with golden pollen before the appearance of young leaves. The Black Pussy Willow perfectly livens up the area around a pond or stream. Associated with small daffodils, it will offer you an unusual and colorful spectacle.
Salix gracilistyla Melanostachys originates from northeast China, Korea and Japan. This willow, used to cold winters, is resistant (-20 °C). Its bushy growth can reach 2 m high and extend over 4 m. You can, if you wish, control its growth and stimulate the growth of new stems by pruning it every two or three years. It appreciates a sunny exposure and prefers deep soils, certainly humid but drained. The Black Pussy Willow does not require special care other than a light surveillance in summer to detect the possible presence of unwanted insects (aphids, caterpillars, beetles).
