Description
Also known as Dense blazing star, Liatris spicata has a lovely feathery bloom in midsummer. Once the clump is well established, it produces up to 20 flowers per plant, making for superb, long-lasting bouquets. Melliferous, this bulbous perennial is ideal for attracting bees to the garden.
Liatris spicata, a variety from the United States, is cold hardy to -20 or even -25°C, so it can be planted anywhere, even in the north. When fully grown, the plant reaches a height of 0.70 to 1 m and a width of 0.40 to 0.50 m. Its linear foliage, of a very pretty green colour, is combined with beautiful, dense, downy purple spikes from July to September. The particularly decorative flowers of the Dense blazing star make it a wonderful plant to decorate beds, rock gardens and edge of a body of water, but also planted in pots on terraces and balconies.
At ease in sunny locations, Liatris spicata appreciates neutral, rocky, moist but well-drained soil. It is planted from March to June, with the bulbs buried 10 cm deep and spaced 20 cm apart.
To form beautiful beds quickly, it is sufficient to plant at least 7 bulbs per m².
