Sarcococca hookeriana Purple Stem : a pretty winter bloom.

Sarcococca hookeriana Purple Stem or Sweet box Purple Stem is an evergreen shrub, with a bushy and compact habit, particularly appreciated for its winter flowering in cream and pink tones, very fragrant. It differs from the type species by finer foliage and nicely purple young shoots. Adult, it can reach from 0.50m to 1.20m in height by 1m in width and is well suited to small gardens and container culture.

The leaves of Sarcococca hookeriana Purple Stem are leathery, lanceolate and narrow. Dark green in color, shiny on the top, they highlight the flowering. From January to March, groups of small cream flowers, tinged with pink at the base, bloom. They give off a powerful scent reminiscent of jasmine and lily of the valley. In autumn, they are followed by small round and fleshy fruits, purple that turn black, very decorative and remaining in place for a good part of the winter.

Sweet box Purple Stem thrives in shade or partial shade in cool soil, enriched in humus and well drained. It likes acidic soils and is resistant to dry periods. Resistant, it supports temperatures from -15 ° to -20 ° C.

Considered a big star of winter, the Sarcococca hookeriana Purple Stem will perfume your garden whether it is planted as a bed, in a low hedge or in a pot.
