The Frangula alnus or Alder buckthorn is a shrub specific to our rural regions. This shrub which is found in Western Europe and especially in our undergrowth, is known to be used in basketry, but also in dyeing thanks to the specific color of its freshly harvested bark which gives the red color to shades almost raspberries, while its dried bark and wood gives tones ranging from red or brown. Its melliferous and discreet flowers tending to anise yellow give purple berries which, they, color in green, they are inedible, but very appreciated by animals for their psychotropic effects.

The Frangula alnus is a robust and easy-care shrub, it tolerates drought well and resists temperatures that can drop to -20°C. At maturity, it reaches a height of 3 to 5 m on an equivalent spread. The Alder buckthorn seduces mainly for the elegance of its deciduous, wavy foliage and a dark green which glows in autumn. After dropping in winter, it picks up again in spring while adorning itself with small, odorless, petalless flowers that appear from May to July.

Frangula alnus should be planted in acidic, moist, well-drained and cool soil. It is preferable to choose a semi-shaded or sunny position. It should be watered moderately to keep the soil cool without over-wetting it. Alder buckthorn has the advantage of being very disease resistant and will require little maintenance thereafter. Pruning is not really necessary, but if it must be done, care should be taken to proceed before the appearance of buds at the end of winter, therefore rather as soon as the first leaves fall.
