Sambucus nigra Milk Chocolate or Black Elder Milk Chocolate is a variety of elderberry that is both new and rare. It is a deciduous shrub, sought after for the spectacular colours of its foliage. Purple when born in the spring, the young shoots gradually take on a lovely creamy brown colour, which then turns into a sumptuous milk chocolate shade.
The other surprise asset of Sambucus nigra Milk Chocolate is its late flowering. Between July and September, when the other varieties of Elderberry in the garden are already fruiting, it unfurls very large flower heads made up of small white, melliferous flowers. Very fragrant, these are very popular with bees.
The flowers give way to small black berries that attract birds. Like the flowers, the fruits lend themselves to various culinary uses. You can make syrups, lemonades, jelly, jam and even elderberry wine and vinegar.
A bush of Black Elder Milk Chocolate is about 2 to 3 meters high and 2 to 2.50 meters wide. Pruning is recommended at the end of winter and will depend on the silhouette you want to give it. You will then discover its superb hollow wood so typical and very decorative.
Sambucus nigra Milk Chocolate is cold-resistant down to -14° C and adapts to all soils. Even a calcareous and poor soil would suffice, provided, however, that it is quite humid and well drained. If you plant your shrub in spring or summer, remember to water it well during the first months.
At home in both sun and partial shade, Black Elder Milk Chocolate looks great both singly and in groups.
