The White Dogwood ‘Nightfall’ is a compact and decorative shrub, remarkable for its dark, evolving foliage and striking red stems in winter, ideal for structuring borders, low hedges, and contemporary gardens.
Description
The White dogwood ‘Nightfall’ is a compact ornamental shrub highly valued for the exceptional depth of its foliage and its four-season decorative interest. This cultivar clearly stands out from classic white dogwoods with a palette of dark and evolving colours, rare among shrubs of this category. From bud break, the foliage develops a deep, almost matte green that immediately provides a strong graphic presence in the garden. During the season, leaves acquire bronze-green reflections, enhancing the plant’s visual density, before gradually turning in early autumn to deep purple, almost black shades, depending on exposure.
In addition to this rich foliage, another major asset is the more intensely coloured red stems in winter, highly visible after leaf fall. They structure beds and add relief to gardens when most plants enter dormancy. With a limited growth of around 1.5 m in height and width, Cornus alba ‘Nightfall’ easily fits into contemporary gardens, low decorative hedges, structured beds, or even large container plantings. It is a reliable, hardy, low-maintenance shrub that provides a strong visual signature without ever becoming invasive.
The species Cornus alba originates from the cold temperate regions of Eastern Europe and Asia. It naturally developed in areas with harsh winters and cool soils, explaining its great hardiness and ability to adapt to many garden conditions.
The ‘Nightfall’ cultivar is a recent horticultural selection, chosen specifically for the intensity and stability of its colouration.
Cornaceae
This cultivar is remarkable for its rare combination of very dark foliage and coloured winter wood, while maintaining a compact and balanced form, suitable for medium-sized gardens.
At maturity, Cornus alba ‘Nightfall’ forms a rounded and balanced shrub of about 1.5 m in height, giving it a compact silhouette easily integrated into various garden styles.
Approximately 1.5 m, with uniform growth maintaining a balanced shape.
The form is naturally bushy and slightly spreading, with main branches that quickly thicken to form a structured volume while maintaining a certain lightness. This allows efficient use in free hedges, structural beds, or as a solitary specimen.
Young shoots show a bright red colouration that becomes particularly intense in winter when the plant is bare. This decorative bark is one of the main winter attractions of the cultivar.
Deciduous foliage with soft texture and pronounced venation. The colour evolves strongly with the seasons: dark green in spring, bronze green in summer, then deep purple to nearly black in autumn, providing remarkable contrast with lighter garden plants.
Moderate growth, allowing good establishment without demanding maintenance.
Excellent hardiness, tolerating temperatures down to -34°C without difficulty.
Flowers appear late spring.
The flowers are small, creamy white, arranged in flat corymbs clearly visible above the foliage. Although discreet, they provide a natural and balanced touch to the plant.
After flowering, small white to bluish decorative berries appear, non-edible, appreciated by birds and contributing to garden biodiversity.
Flowering attracts various pollinators, and fruiting provides a secondary food source for local wildlife.
Full sun to partial shade. A bright location enhances the darkest foliage colours and the intensity of winter stems.
Soil fresh, humus-rich and well-structured, tolerating heavier soils provided they are not permanently waterlogged.
Work the soil deeply to encourage rooting, then enrich it with well-decomposed organic matter to improve structure and water retention.
Allow 1.2 to 1.5 m between plants to enable harmonious development.
Soil neutral to slightly acidic, fresh to slightly moist, tolerating clay or loamy soils.
Place the root ball at ground level, backfill carefully, lightly firm the soil, then water abundantly to ensure good contact between roots and soil.
Water regularly during the first weeks to secure root establishment.
Relatively tolerant shrub, but prefers slightly fresh soil, especially during summer.
Pruning Cornus alba ‘Nightfall’ is ideally done at the end of winter or early spring, before growth begins:
Light pruning each year promotes better structure and enhances the winter stem colouration.
Propagation is generally done by semi-hardwood cuttings, although true cultivar reproduction requires specialized vegetative propagation techniques.
Shrub borders, low decorative hedges, isolated or grouped plantings, as well as in large containers on terraces.
Pairs well with ornamental grasses, light-foliaged shrubs, or graphic perennials highlighting its dark colours.
Primarily used as a structuring ornamental shrub, valued for its winter interest.
Robust shrub, rarely subject to health issues when planted in suitable conditions.
Good aeration, balanced soil, and organic mulching are usually sufficient to keep the plant healthy.
Provide bright exposure, keep soil fresh, and perform regular pruning to renew coloured shoots.
The ‘Nightfall’ clearly stands out from other Cornus alba for its extremely dark foliage, almost black in autumn, and for its compact form, ideal for gardens with limited space.
The White dogwood ‘Nightfall’ is a characterful shrub, capable of bringing structure, contrast, and depth to the garden year-round. Its dark foliage highlights neighbouring plants, while its red stems illuminate winter scenes. Hardy, easy to grow, and low-maintenance, it suits both modern gardens and more naturalistic compositions. Its moderate size allows integration into various landscape projects without constraint, while ensuring a lasting and elegant visual impact.
