Description
Betula nana, or Dwarf birch, is a small shrub native to arctic circumpolar regions (Canada, Northern Europe, Siberia). With its boreal origins, Dwarf Birch is very resistant to cold (-25 ° C) and can be grown in regions with harsh climate. This shrub does not exceed 60 cm in height. Its bushy habit tends to spread as the tree ages, becoming crawling. The main attraction of Dwarf Birch is the beauty of its deciduous foliage. The very small oval and regularly serrated leaves are of a beautiful bright green. In autumn, its foliage takes ocher and golden colors.
Due to its slow growth and small size, Betula nana can be grown in a garden, but also in pots and can be installed on a terrace or balcony. It requires no maintenance, except remove any dead or unsightly branches. Not very demanding and very adaptable, the Dwarf birch can be grown in the sun as in partial shade. It prefers a fresh soil, with acid tendency, as in its natural habitat (peat bogs). It can be associated with heather plants, such as camellias or Japanese maples.
