It belongs to the Verbenaceae family, just like verbenas and lantanas.

The 'Hint of Gold' variety stands out for its luminous golden foliage and its excellent performance in hot and dry climates.

  • Foliage: Deciduous, golden in spring, turning acid yellow/lime green in summer, aromatic when crushed (notes of anise and lavender)
  • Flowering: July to September
  • Flowers: Clusters of small lavender-blue flowers, rich in nectar (bee-friendly), grouped in spikes on the upper part of the stems
  • Fragrance: Light, mainly on the foliage
  • Hardiness: Good (down to -18 °C)

  • Subsequently: Very low maintenance; water only during prolonged drought

Pruning

  • When to prune?: Late winter or very early spring (February-March)
  • How to prune?:
  • Cut back stems hard to 10-15 cm from the ground to encourage new flowering shoots
  • Clean up dead stems at the end of the season

Propagation

  • By cuttings: Semi-ripe cuttings in summer

Garden use

Caryopteris 'Hint of Gold' is perfect for:

  • Dry beds and sunny spots
  • Rock gardens and banks
  • Container growing on terraces and balconies
  • Mixed borders to extend summer flowering.
  • Protection against diseases
  • Naturally resistant to diseases and pests
  • Only fears heavy and poorly drained soils which can cause root rot

Tips for good development

  • Must be planted in full sun for vibrant colours
  • Mulch lightly to limit evaporation in summer, without covering the base
  • Do not over-enrich the soil to avoid excessive foliage at the expense of flowering

Caryopteris × clandonensis 'Hint of Gold', thanks to its striking foliage, nectar-rich flowering, and compact habit, is a gem for dry gardens, rockeries, and modern terraces. Its ease of maintenance and long-lasting decorative effect make it a valuable ally for prolonging colour right up to the gates of autumn.
