Acer saccharinum, also called Silver maple, is a majestic tree that can reach 20 to 30 meters in height when mature. Its silver-grey bark is very distinctive, as is its deeply cut foliage, which is silver-green above and silver below. In autumn, the leaves take on beautiful orange-yellow to red hues, offering a breathtaking spectacle. The small greenish flowers appear in late winter or the first weeks of spring, followed by winged fruits in May/June.

Moist, acid to neutral and rather clayey soil is perfect for Silver Maple. However, limestone should be avoided. Acer saccharinum tolerates temporarily flooded soils and withstands temperatures down to -35 °C, making it a hardy tree that can withstand the harshest climates. Its habit is erect, with slightly drooping branches, which adds a nice touch of character to your garden.

Silver maple is very similar to red maple, with which it can easily hybridize. However, they can be differentiated by their much larger, more deeply lobed leaves with a silvery underside. It's also very easy to maintain, making it a popular choice among beginners and experienced gardeners.

But one of the silver maple's most attractive attributes is its ability to produce maple syrup. Although maple syrup production is often associated with sugar maple, silver maple can also produce a lighter-hued, yet equally delicious syrup. If you like to cook and are looking for new flavours to try, Acer saccharinum could help you make tasty dishes.

Conclusion: Acer saccharinum is a majestic, easy-to-care-for tree that can add a touch of beauty and delicacy to any garden. With its silvery gray bark, shiny silvery-green leaves that turn red in the fall, and its ability to produce delicious maple syrup, this tree has it all.

How to plant silver maple and help it grow healthily?

1. Choose the perfect location

Location is crucial to the success of your silver maple planting. The tree needs nutrient-rich, well-drained soil, as well as full sun to partial shade. Avoid planting your silver maple near buildings, electrical wires or underground pipes. It is also important to consider the mature size of the tree and provide enough space for it to grow.

2. Prepare the ground

Before planting your silver maple, prepare the soil by digging a hole twice as wide as the tree's container and to an equivalent depth. Remove all weeds, rocks and roots to avoid clogging the roots of the tree. Then mix organic fertilizer or compost with the soil removed from the hole to improve the quality of the soil.

3. Plant silver maple

Now that the soil is ready, carefully remove the silver maple from its container and place the roots in the hole. Make sure the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface. Fill the hole with the soil and compost mixture, packing the soil firmly around the roots. Water generously to secure the roots in place.

4. Maintain your silver maple

Once your silver maple is planted, it is important to maintain it to ensure its healthy growth. Keep the soil moist, but avoid overwatering to prevent root rot. Apply organic fertilizer or compost annually to nourish the tree.
