The Quercus Acutissima or Sawtooth oak is a very beautiful deciduous ornamental tree native to East Asia (China, Korea and Japan). It is especially appreciated for its lush foliage, which bears a striking resemblance to that of a chestnut tree, but also for the elegance of its slender habit.
Marcescent, the leaves are very elongated and measure 8 to 15 cm. They are dark green, but come fall they take on a lovely yellow hue. They then give the whole tree a sumptuously golden appearance.
It is no coincidence that this oak is called Sawtooth oak, and for good reason, its leaves are lined with very fine triangular serrations that are reminiscent of the leaves of the chestnut tree.
The bark is dark gray, it becomes deeply grooved over the years. The crown is dense and rounded.
Although not spectacular, sawtooth oak flowering is not without charm. It takes place in May and consists of wind-pollinated golden catkins. They are followed by acorns 2 to 3 cm by 2 cm wide, with the cap topped with long greenish growths, like flexible hairs of 5 to 8 mm, which give them a rather singular appearance. This aspect strongly brings it closer to the Quercus Cerris to which it is close, it bears the same fruits.
This oak reaches 10 to 15 meters in height on average for a spread of 6 to 10 m. Hardy, it withstands negative temperatures down to -23° C.
Sawtooth oak needs little to enhance your garden. A good exposure to the sun, a fairly humid and well-drained soil is more than enough for it. It tolerates limestone well and is equally fond of soils with a loamy, clayey and sandy texture. An acid to neutral soil will therefore suit it perfectly.
Quercus Acutissima grows at a medium rate. To highlight and take advantage of all its charm, it is best to plant it isolated or in alignment.
