Description
Quercus imbricaria or Shingle oak is a beautiful deciduous ornamental tree native to the central and eastern United States. It is sought after for its elegance and more particularly its characteristic foliage.
With an elongated oval shape, its leaves are 7 to 17 cm long and 2.5 to 5 cm wide, and are very similar to those of the laurel. The top of the leaf is dark green and shiny, and the underside is light green, the edge is slightly wavy. The midrib is reddish brown.
From the beginning of autumn, the marcescent foliage of Quercus imbricaria ignites in a rather spectacular palette of orange to coppery red shades. Wherever it is planted, the charming effect is then irresistible.
The Quercus imbricaria measures 15 to 20 m on average and a spread of 15 to 18 m. The shape is pyramidal for young shrubs and more rounded for adult subjects. The crown is half-open. Gray to grey-brown in colour, the bark is smooth, but it acquires a more cracked and rough appearance with age.
Discreet, the flowering of Shingle oak takes place between April and May in the form of golden yellow kittens. The fruits are globose, flattened acorns that mature in autumn.
Quercus imbricaria needs exposure to full sun to flourish and express its full aesthetic potential. Provide it with cool to moist, non-calcareous (acid to neutral), sandy-loamy, gravelly-loamy or sandy-clay soil and count on it to never disappoint you. It supports temporarily flooded soils.
The Shingle oak is a hardy tree from -23° to -29°C. Planted alone or in alignment along an alley, it will delight you all year round with the bewitching spectacle of its seasonal metamorphoses.
