Description
Japanese flowering Cherry ‘Sunset Boulevard’ – Prunus serrulata ‘Sunset Boulevard’
Main features
The Japanese cherry ‘Sunset Boulevard’ (Prunus serrulata ‘Sunset Boulevard’) is a graceful, upright ornamental tree combining Pinkish-white spring blossom with warm sunset autumn tones.
Its narrow, vertical shape makes it perfect for modern or small gardens.
Origin and characteristics
Prunus serrulata ‘Sunset Boulevard’ is a recent horticultural hybrid resulting from Belgian breeding programs. It was created in 1988 at the Kalmthout Arboretum. This hybridization aimed to combine resistance, floridity, and a compact habit.
It reaches 6–7 m high and 2.5 m wide, with smooth grey-brown bark and finely serrated green leaves.
Young foliage emerges bronze, then turns green, finally glowing orange and copper-red in autumn.
Flowering and ornamental value
In April, a multitude of single, 3- to 4-cm-wide flowers appear, grouped in clusters along the branches, giving off a light, sweet fragrance.
The flowers are lightly scented and attract bees.
Even young trees flower generously, creating a stunning spring display.
Position and soil
Grow in full sun in moist but well-drained, fertile soil.
Hardy to –20 °C, it tolerates light limestone and suits temperate climates.
Shelter from strong winds and mulch to conserve moisture.
Planting and care
Plant in autumn or spring.
Water regularly while establishing.
Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape.
Low-maintenance, hardy and elegant – ideal for modern landscapes.
Garden use
‘Sunset Boulevard’ is excellent for avenues, patios, narrow borders or urban courtyards.
It combines well with maples, magnolias and dogwoods, creating refined spring compositions.
Pests and diseases
Generally healthy and disease-resistant, requiring minimal care.
Occasional aphids or sap exudation may appear in hot, dry spells but remain harmless.
The Japanese cherry ‘Sunset Boulevard’ (Prunus serrulata) is a modern classic combining vertical elegance with dazzling colour.
Its spring blossoms and glowing autumn leaves create year-round interest.
Hardy, graceful and easy to grow, it is ideal for stylish gardens and refined landscapes.
