Description
This is a hardy, ornamental shrub that deserves a prominent place in your garden. Native to North America, this shrub is prized for its spectacular flowering and attractive foliage.
Chionanthus virginicus is distinguished by its long panicles of white flowers, slightly fragrant, which appear in spring. These fringe‑like flowers create a striking visual effect. The foliage of the white fringetree is equally notable, composed of long, glossy green leaves measuring between 8 and 15 cm. In autumn these leaves turn a beautiful golden yellow, adding colour to your garden.
The white fringetree is very hardy, able to withstand temperatures down to about -23.5 °C. Growth is relatively fast, reaching a height of 3 to 4 metres at maturity with a spread of around 3 metres. Its habit is spreading and bushy, allowing it to fit harmoniously into a variety of landscape designs.
Flowering of Chionanthus virginicus generally occurs between May and June. Male and female flowers appear as pendulous clusters with long, narrow white petals. Female flowers, if pollinated by nearby male flowers, produce olive‑shaped, bluish‑black fruits in autumn. These fruits are enjoyed by birds, adding an ecological dimension to the shrub.
