Prunus spinosa, native to Asia, is a fast-growing thorny shrub. In spring, it has a multitude of small white flowers that appear before foliage, making this shrub very melliferous. The flowers of the blackthorn give way in late summer to small, round, blue-black fruits that are edible but very bitter. They must be harvested after the frosts and are then used in jams or to make an excellent brandy. The thorns and fruit make it a popular refuge for birds, which find it a place to stay and eat.

The blackthorn has a very wide bushy habit and is particularly resistant to the cold (-28°C). It will quickly reach a height of 4 metres and a width of 3 metres. It can be planted in any kind of soil, but it particularly likes clay-limestone soils.

The Prunus spinosa is an ideal shrub to have at home. You will appreciate its pure white flowers in spring, followed by the harvest of the fruit, which can be used to make many recipes. Don't hesitate to integrate the blackthorn in a wild or defensive hedge, you will also be able to observe the numerous species of birds that will come to take refuge there.
