Self-fertile, early-bearing and highly productive, the Citrus unshiu, or Satsuma mandarin, is the ideal citrus tree for enjoying an abundance of fruit. Naturally seedless, its juicy mandarins will delight gardeners with a sweet tooth. With its attractive, slightly weeping habit, the Citrus unshiu also stands out for its rapid growth and good cold hardiness: with suitable protection, it can overwinter in the ground in milder climates.

Native to South-East Asia, the Satsuma mandarin tree is very cold-hardy and can withstand temperatures as low as -10°C. Reaching a height of 2 metres, this tree spreads out to 1.50 metres. Its evergreen foliage is accompanied, from April to May, by pretty, fragrant white flowers. And between September and November, the Citrus Unshiu produces tasty mandarins, approximately 6 cm in diameter. Rich in aroma and very sweet, these fruits can be eaten fresh from the tree or used in cakes, tarts, and even poultry dishes.

Best planted from April to June, the Satsuma mandarin tree thrives in rich, well-drained soil and sunny positions. During the cold season, remember to protect it with a good wintering cover or grow it in a container so that you can bring it indoors. In a Mediterranean style, the Citrus Unshiu pairs well with the Seville orange tree or the ever-popular oleander.

Plant grafted onto a P.trifoliata rootstock.
