Description
The Ficus carica Ronde de Bordeaux, the first autumn figs.
The Ficus carica Ronde de Bordeaux or Fig tree Ronde de Bordeaux is a large variety of fig tree (5 to 6 m high for a spread of 3 to 4 m), very early and very productive. Indeed, from the end of July, it produces small round figs with fine black purple skin and very juicy and sweet red flesh. Self-fertile (just one foot is enough to produce fruit) and unified (fruits only once a year), this vigorously growing tree resists severe frosts (down to -17 ° C) very well. If it freezes below -20 ° C, it will start again from the strain.
The Fig tree Ronde de Bordeaux flowers in May. Flowering is followed by small-caliber fruits which are harvested until October. These are the first autumn figs with a very fragrant flavor. This fig can be eaten fresh or dried, it is used in cooking to make pies or jams. It is also used to garnish savory dishes.
The Ficus carica Ronde de Bordeaux is undemanding, it thrives in any type of soil from neutral to limestone, preferably light, rich and well-drained, stony. Choose an exposure in full sun, sheltered from cold winds. Pruning is practiced in early spring, cut the branches that have fruited to promote production the following year.
