Paperbark maple or Acer Griseum is a remarkable tree, appreciated above all for its cinnamon brown bark which exfoliates. It also embellishes gardens in autumn thanks to its leaves, which turn fiery red.

This tree is native to China and can reach 10 m in height as well as spreading (6-8 m in our gardens). It is hardy down to -30 °C and often grows in clumps (several trunks). Its port is spread out. Its deciduous foliage is composed of opposite leaves with 3 leaflets, they are purple to pink when the buds burst, then light green and finally red in autumn. In June, its flowering, rather insignificant, is followed by winged fruits of about 4 to 5 cm.

The cinnamon-coloured bark of Acer Griseum exfoliates nicely and is most noticeable in winter, when the branches are bare. Easy to grow, it grows in any cool, fertile and well-drained soil, in a sunny to semi-shaded position. Slow growing, Paperbark maple is magnificent on its own in the middle of a lawn or in a bed.

To plant an Acer Griseum, you must dig a hole twice as large as the root ball and add compost or well-decomposed compost. It is then necessary to water abundantly and pack the soil around the roots to avoid air pockets, then stake. It is recommended to mulch the foot to keep some moisture in the soil.
