Witch Hazel or Hamamelis Virginiana is perfect for brightening up the garden at the very end of autumn: its original flowering then tempers the greyness with a touch of cheerful colour. This beautiful shrub is also known for its many medicinal properties and for its good tolerance to pollution.

Native to North America, Hamamelis Virginiana is cold hardy to -20 °C. When fully grown, it reaches a height of 4 to 4.5 metres and a spread of 3 to 4 metres. It has a flared habit and deciduous green foliage, which is very reminiscent of hazelnut trees. It takes on an attractive yellow hue in autumn. The Witch Hazel flowers from mid-October to mid-December. The lightly scented, pale yellow flowers are lovely in the frost and have very fine petals that form curious, ruffled “stars”.

Hamamelis Virginiana is a mid-shade plant with a marked preference for acidic, cool, light soil. It is planted in spring or autumn. If pruning is necessary, it should be done after flowering, keeping a light hand.

Rich in tannins with astringent and antioxidant effects, but also in vitamin P, a vasoconstrictor, Witch Hazel is used to alleviate circulatory disorders.

It is interesting to plant it alone or in small groups of 5 to 6 trees, in groves.
