Dutch elm Jacqueline Hillier: The Ulmus minor Jacqueline Hillier, elegant and refined, is a slow-growing shrub with a twisted, highly decorative silhouette reminiscent of a bonsai. It fits beautifully into a Japanese-style garden or any small green space. Also known as the Dwarf elm Jacqueline Hillier, this European elm cultivar displays splendid deciduous foliage and charming reddish flowers at the end of spring. Easy to grow and disease-resistant, it requires little maintenance and is suitable for all gardeners.

With its bushy habit, contorted branching and slightly fissured trunk as it ages, the Ulmus minor Jacqueline Hillier can reach 1.80 to 2.50 meters in height and spread. Its small oblong leaves (2 to 3 cm), crinkled and serrated, are green during the growing season and turn golden in autumn. After its lovely reddish flowers appear in March–April, it produces samaras, small dry fruits, oval and flattened, green‑brown in colour and quite ornamental.

The Dwarf elm Jacqueline Hillier thrives in humus-rich, well-drained and rather fresh soils, from acidic to neutral. Preferring a lightly sunny or semi-shaded exposure, it withstands cold down to –24 °C. A light winter pruning helps shape its fine branches and gives it a dense appearance. Grown in containers, as a specimen, in hedges or in borders, the Ulmus minor Jacqueline Hillier pairs wonderfully with a Golden elm, a Japanese maple or a Cornus Empress of China.
