Origins and characteristics
Native to China and Japan, Clerodendrum trichotomum belongs to the Lamiaceae family. It is grown for its intensely fragrant summer bloom and its spectacularly coloured fruits.
Description and particularities
Adult height: 3 to 5 metres.
Adult spread: around 3 to 4 metres.
Habit: Bushy to small spreading tree, sometimes forming several trunks.
Foliage: Deciduous; large dark green oval leaves, slightly hairy and aromatic when crushed.
Flowering period: August to September.
Flowers: Small white star‑shaped flowers, intensely jasmine‑scented, grouped in cymes.
Fruits: Bright turquoise berries set in a deep red calyx, highly ornamental in autumn.
Hardiness: Good, down to about -20 °C.
