Description
Native to China and Japan, Deutzia scabra belongs to the Hydrangeaceae family. It is valued for its fragrant summer flowering and its decorative peeling bark in winter.
Adult height: 2 to 3 m.
Adult spread: around 2 m.
Habit: Upright, dense, bushy.
Foliage: Deciduous; dark green, rough to the touch, turning yellow in autumn.
Flowering period: May to July.
Flowers: White, star‑shaped, fragrant flowers in 10–15 cm panicles; highly attractive to pollinators.
Fruits: Small, discreet brown capsules.
Hardiness: Excellent, down to about -25 °C.
Exposure: Full sun or partial shade.
Soil: Rich, fresh, well‑drained.
Tolerance: Accepts slightly calcareous soils; dislikes cold winds.
Season: Autumn or spring.
Preparation: Loosen soil and enrich with mature compost.
Spacing: 1.50 m in staggered rows for hedging.
At planting: Water regularly to ensure establishment.
When mature: Water in summer to support flowering.
When: Immediately after flowering (July–August).
Advice: Remove a few old stems at ground level each year to rejuvenate the shrub.
Semi‑ripe cuttings in summer.
Positions: Shrub borders, informal flowering hedges, lawn specimen, large terrace containers.
