Origins and characteristics

Native to China and Japan, Deutzia scabra belongs to the Hydrangeaceae family. It is valued for its fragrant summer flowering and its decorative peeling bark in winter.

Description and particularities

Adult height: 2 to 3 m.

Adult spread: around 2 m.

Habit: Upright, dense, bushy.

Foliage: Deciduous; dark green, rough to the touch, turning yellow in autumn.

Flowering period: May to July.

Flowers: White, star‑shaped, fragrant flowers in 10–15 cm panicles; highly attractive to pollinators.

Fruits: Small, discreet brown capsules.

Hardiness: Excellent, down to about -25 °C.

Exposure and soil

Exposure: Full sun or partial shade.

Soil: Rich, fresh, well‑drained.

Tolerance: Accepts slightly calcareous soils; dislikes cold winds.

Planting
