Upright Golden Birch
Betula pendula Golden Obelisk
The Betula pendula Golden Obelisk, also called Upright Golden Birch, is a small ornamental tree with a columnar habit and bright yellow foliage. It has several attractions which make it a subject of choice for small gardens or restricted spaces.
First of all, its magnificent yellow foliage from spring to fall catches the eye and creates a striking contrast with its silver-white bark. Its leaves are triangular, toothed and shiny, and have the particularity of not burning in the sun despite their yellow colour.
Then, its exfoliating bark is whiter than that of the Fastigiata Birch, which gives it an elegant and refined appearance. It is smooth and shiny on young branches, then cracks and peels off in horizontal bands on the boot. It contrasts with the red-brown branches, which bear flowers in yellow-brown catkins in spring.
Finally, its columnar habit, but less narrow than that of the Fastigiata Birch, gives it a graceful and airy silhouette. It reaches approximately 6 to 7 m in height and 3 m in width, making it suitable for small spaces. Its branches are erect then slightly drooping, forming a regular cone.
To successfully plant Upright Golden Birch, you must choose a sunny or partial shade location, sheltered from strong sea winds. It must also be provided with fresh, humus-rich and well-drained soil, preferably slightly acidic. It does not tolerate overly dry, limestone or compacted soils.
Planting is preferably done in the fall or early spring, by digging a hole twice as wide as the rootball and adding compost or potting soil. It is necessary to pack the earth well around the collar and water abundantly. The base must then be mulched to conserve humidity and prevent weeds.
Growing Betula pendula Golden Obelisk is easy and does not require much maintenance. You simply need to water regularly in case of drought, especially in the first years, and add organic fertilizer in spring. Pruning is not necessary except to remove dead or misplaced branches.
The use of Upright Golden Birch in the garden is varied. It can be planted alone, in a row, in a group or at the bottom of a clump. It brings light and verticality to the landscape, and goes well with other trees or shrubs with dark or coloured foliage.
