The Black Birch owes its name to its particularly decorative bark, with brown-black tints and red reflections, which peels off in sheets to reveal a grey-orange trunk.
Betula Nigra is a very hardy tree, capable of withstanding long, harsh winters, frosts down to -20°C, as well as drought and wind. It requires little care, is very easy to maintain and adapts to all soils and requires exposure to sun or half-shade. For a nice effect, you can also plant ground cover species such as bear's garlic or Roman chamomile at the foot of the tree.
The Black Birch will be perfect in a bed to highlight the changing colours of its bark in winter, but it can also be used in a row or as a windbreak hedge.
