Very rare in the gardens, it is distinguished by a beautiful bright green foliage resembling that of the mountain ash and by abundant sumptuous flowers which give way to fruits identical to those of the chestnut tree. The leaves and fruits of the Yellowhorn are edible.

Originally from China and Korea, Xanthoceras sorbifolium or Yellowhorn is a small ornamental tree of the Sapindaceae family. Very rare in the gardens, it is distinguished by a beautiful bright green foliage resembling that of the mountain ash and by abundant sumptuous flowers which give way to fruits identical to those of the chestnut tree. The leaves and fruits of the Yellowhorn are edible.
In the spring, large panicles of white flowers, 2 cm in diameter, appear, whose heart is marked with acid yellow which turns orange and then purple. Flowering lasts from April to May. Then the fruits develop in the form of rough oval capsules, green in color becoming brown when ripe. In autumn, they open to release shiny seeds resembling small horse chestnuts. These seeds are edible and have a taste similar to that of chestnut.
Very hardy, cold-resistant up to -23°C, Xanthoceras sorbifolium enjoys the sun and is not afraid of dry, calcareous soils.
Can reach a height of 2 to 4 m for a spread of 2 to 3 m, the Yellowhorn will be more put in value if it is planted in isolated or in bottom of shrubbery.
