Also known as Arabian Lilac or Chaste Tree, Vitex trifolia purpurea is native to the Middle East and other warm regions of the globe, such as Australia.
Honey and wonder flowers
Borne in clusters, the flowers of Vitex trifolia purpurea are purple lilac and will delight your eyes throughout the summer (July to September). They will brighten up your garden all the more because they are honey producing and their precious nectar cheerfully attracts bees, butterflies and bumblebees. In the fall, the flowers are followed by fruits in the form of small drupes, black when ripe.
Very eye-catching, the trifoliate leaves of the Arabian Lilac are evergreen to half-evergreen, even deciduous depending on the climate, and ideal for adorning dry gardens and covered terraces. They are distinguished by their superb olive-green or grayish colour on the top, and their silvery purple and downy underside with purple veins. Crumple them and let yourself be carried away by their delicately peppery scent reminiscent of lavender.
Vitex trifolia purpurea is a fast-growing shrub with a dense, rounded habit and which, in adulthood, reaches up to 4 meters in height and more than 2 meters in width.
The Arabian lilac is best planted in spring or autumn. Although it can thrive in any soil, it particularly likes dry, stony, sandy, well-drained soils, as it fears stagnant moisture.
The Arabian Lilac appreciates full sun to partial shade, but in partial shade its colouring will be less intense. Allow a distance of 60 cm for planting in tubs and about 80 cm for planting in clumps. To obtain a compact form, prune moderately after each flowering.
Moderately hardy, it will withstand negative temperatures down to -8 °C. Once well established, if the moderate frost destroys its branches, it will start again from the stump. Planting in the ground is possible in temperate regions. In more northern regions, it is better to plant in a large pot to overwinter the shrub in a cool, dry place. Vitex trifolia purpurea is well adapted to drought, it tolerates spray very well, it is not known to have any diseases or harmful insects.
Planted singly, in shrub beds or in free hedges, Vitex trifolia purpurea will always sublimate your garden thanks to its remarkable bushy habit and its amazing colours. It will have an even more exquisite effect in free hedges or Mediterranean groves in the company of lavender, for example.
