Corylus avellana Rode Zellernoot has a very decorative flowering habit with long purple catkins of 6 to 7 cm, which bloom from January to March for the male flowers and until April for the female flowers. The Purple Hazel tree Rode Zellernoot is resistant to -35 °C and reaches a height of 4 to 6 m and a width of 3 to 4 m. It has an upright habit and grows rapidly.
In mid-May the foliage appears, first red at the beginning, then turning bright purple and finally bronze green in summer. The leaves of the Purple Hazel tree Rode Zellernoot are large, reaching 10 cm.
The Corylus avellana Rode Zellernoot can be planted as a hedge at 1 m intervals, but can also be planted in the background of a bed or as an isolated plant to show off its beautiful spring purple coloring. It adapts well to all types of soil.
A simple pruning at the end of autumn will suffice to eliminate the less vigorous branches and clear the base of any shoots.
