Calycanthus floridus or Carolina Allspice is an original and elegant shrub that deserves a place in gardens. Its name means “chalice flower” and refers to its unusual flowers, which resemble water lilies. These 4 cm flowers are a beautiful red-brown colour and give off a sweet strawberry scent. They appear from a very young age, in May-June, they are solitary at the end of the branches. They attract the eyes and noses of lovers of rare and fragrant plants.

Calycanthus floridus is a deciduous shrub native to the southeastern United States and was introduced to Europe in the early 19th century. Rapidly growing, it forms a loose and graceful bush which can reach 1.50 m in height and spread. Its aromatic leaves with camphorous odors are oval, green, shiny on top and downy on the bottom. They take on beautiful yellow, orange and amber hues in the fall before falling. Its fruits are brown, hairy capsules that contain seeds. Its bark is red-brown and aromatic.

Carolina Allspice is an easy to grow shrub and adapts to all deep, rich, cool and well-drained soils. It tolerates sun or partial shade, but it needs warmth and light to flower well. The Calycanthus floridus is planted in autumn or early spring, in a wide and deep hole, with compost or potting soil. It is necessary to water regularly the first year, then in case of prolonged drought. It does not need pruning except to remove dead or unbalanced branches. It is not susceptible to diseases or harmful insects. It can be used as an isolated subject, in a free hedge or in a clump of shrubs and perennials. It is a plant that brings originality and elegance to the garden.
