Hypericum kalmianum, Kalm's St. John's wort: a pretty bluish-green shrub with small golden flowers.

Hypericum kalmianum, or Kalm's St. John's wort, forms a small, round, bushy and compact clump. All summer long, it is covered with small golden yellow flowers that contrast sharply with its dark green foliage with a bluish reverse. Native to North America, this small shrub is fast growing. When fully grown, it measures between 60 and 90 centimetres in height and the same amount of spread. Its bright yellow flowers are small, 2 cm in diameter. They are melliferous and attract pollinating insects. The flowers are dense and cover the shrub from July to September. The flowering is followed by small, decorative, inedible fruits that attract birds. The foliage is lanceolate with oblong leaves and is semi-evergreen, but the shrub can withstand temperatures as low as -20°C.

Kalm's St. John's Wort should be planted in stony, sandy or rocky soil, always well drained. Hypericum kalmianum will tolerate acidic to neutral soil, and is equally at home in sun or part shade. Prune the shrub in spring to encourage flowering, which occurs on the year's wood.

Hypericum kalmianum can be used as a low hedge to line a path or along a wall in front of a shrubbery. It can be planted in clumps as well as in copses or as an isolated plant.
