Ulmus carpinifolia Wredei, Golden elm Wredei is a tree with a columnar pyramidal silhouette which immediately impresses with its striking luminosity.

It owes this shine to its small leaves, which are golden yellow in spring, greenish yellow in summer, then even more pronounced golden in autumn.

These are deciduous leaves measuring 8 to 10 cm, embossed and rough, which grow very close to the branches. Oval and pointed in shape, they are wavy on the edges and twice serrated.

The flowering of Ulmus carpinifolia Wredei is discreet, but for a sensitive eye, it does not lack charm. It takes place in March/April and consists of tiny red-brown flowers without petals gathered in bouquets.

The flowers are followed by very decorative fruits, called samaras, which, before maturity, resemble small light green butterflies with red-spotted wings.

Slow growing and with its 9 m height and 2 m spread (without pruning), Ulmus carpinifolia Wredei is perfect for modest-sized gardens.

Golden elm is hardy down to -25°C, or even more. It appreciates not too hot sun and partial shade. Plant it in humus-rich, draining soil, preferably deep, rich and acidic to neutral. Avoid soil that is too dry, consider protecting it from strong winds.

The first year, water Golden elm Wredei once every two weeks. After two years, it will not need watering or tutoring to continue its luminous growth.

An isolated installation in the middle of a lawn or in counterpoint to a dark green bed will highlight all its brilliance and create a captivating visual effect. For a marked contrast, you can, for example, opt for a grove of purple birch trees or plant it at the bottom of flowerbeds with Physocarpus Red Baron in the front plants.
