Description
The Versaillaise Blanche is a heritage white currant variety known for its long, airy clusters of translucent berries, ranging from pearly white to pale amber. Its fruit is soft and fruity, with a subtly tangy sweetness that is very pleasant on the palate.
Selected in France around the mid-19th century, likely near Versailles, this variety is appreciated for its moderate vigour, cold hardiness, and ease of cultivation. The deciduous shrub has a slightly spreading habit and reaches 1.3 to 1.5 metres in height. It bears light green, trilobed leaves and a discreet but nectar-rich spring bloom.
The berries are medium-sized, grouped in loose clusters of 8 to 12 fruits. Their translucent skin reveals the seeds inside, giving them a luminous and refined look. Colour ranges from ivory white to pale yellow, sometimes with amber highlights depending on sun exposure.
The flesh is juicy, tender, and low in acidity. The flavour is sweet, with fruity and floral notes reminiscent of white grapes or pear. Less tart than red currants, it’s ideal for sensitive palates. In the mouth, the berry bursts gently, releasing a clear, fragrant juice.
Perfect for fresh eating, Versaillaise Blanche also lends itself to jam, translucent jelly, coulis, delicate tarts, and light syrups. Its natural sweetness allows for reduced sugar in recipes. It pairs beautifully with savoury dishes, especially white fish or fresh cheeses.
Prefers humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil and a sunny to semi-shaded location. Winter pruning encourages young shoots and open growth. Organic mulch helps maintain consistent yields.
The White currant Versaillaise Blanche (Ribes rubrum ‘Versaillaise Blanche’) stands out for its clusters of translucent, soft, and fruity berries in pearly to amber hues. Its delicate, low-acid flavour makes it ideal for fresh eating and light preparations. This heritage and hardy variety adapts well to many gardens and offers generous mid-season harvests. Easy to grow, it requires minimal care and tolerates cold well. Its nectar-rich bloom attracts pollinators, and its luminous fruits add elegance to edible hedges. Whether for visual appeal or refined taste, Versaillaise Blanche is a reliable choice for lovers of fine berries.
