Description
A self-fertile shrub, the Red Gooseberry Achilles or Ribes uva-crispa Achilles produces large, purple, fragrant fruit. It is the ideal variety to treat all gourmets during the summer months!
Cold hardy to -20°C, Ribes uva-crispa Achilles is a hardy currant that can be planted without fear of harsh winters. When fully grown, this deciduous shrub is 1.5 metres high and 1.5 metres wide. In May, it produces pinkish-red flowers which give rise to beautiful purple fruits with smooth skins, very rich in vitamin C. Sweet and fragrant, they are harvested from the end of July to August. They are delicious eaten fresh, as jam or in homemade cocktails.
The Red Gooseberry Achilles thrives in full sun, or half-shade in warmer regions. It enjoys all soils and can be planted either as an isolated plant or as a hedge, with a mixture of garden soil, compost and potting soil to promote good growth. At the end of winter, Ribes uva-crispa Achilles is pruned to 1/3 of its height.
