Description
The Nashi ‘Hosui’ pear is a Japanese variety known for its crisp, aromatic flesh and round bronze-colored fruits. Grafted as a low-stem tree, it combines disease resistance, a beautiful April bloom, and early harvest. While partially self-fertile, it yields far better with cross-pollination.
Origin: Japan, bred in 1972 (Kikusui × Yakumo)
Botanical family: Rosaceae
Notable feature: Texture between an apple and a European pear
Height: 2.5–3.5 m (low-stem)
Width: 2.5–3 m
Shape: Upright to spreading
Bark: Light brown-grey
Foliage: Broad, dark green, deciduous
Growth: Moderate
Hardiness: Very good (down to -20°C)
Blooming time: Early to mid-April
Flowers: White, large, bee-attracting
Fruits: Round, bronze-skinned fruits with crisp, juicy, sweet white-yellow flesh. Ripens: late August – early September
Storage: Up to 2 months in cool, dry conditions
Sunlight: Full sun
Soil: Deep, well-drained, fertile
pH: Neutral to slightly acidic
Soil prep: Mix in compost or orchard soil
Spacing: 3–4 m
Year 1: Frequent watering
After: Moderate; prefers some summer moisture
Schedule: Shape in first 3 years, light pruning in winter thereafter
Rootstock: Quince or Pyrus communis (for low-stem trees)
Ideal for: Family orchards, edible hedges
Companions: ‘Kosui’, ‘Shinseiki’, ‘Williams’, chives, sage
Use: Fresh sliced or grated, juiced or dried
Taste profile: Refreshing and sweet, slightly aromatic
Resistance: High against scab and fire blight
Prevention: Horsetail spray, mulch, airflow
Keys: Sunny location, well-drained soil, avoid stagnant water, mulch in summer
‘Hosui’ is not self-fertile, for fruiting it is necessary to have a compatible variety for pollination.
Higher yields with: Pyrus pyrifolia Kosui, Shinseiki, Pyrus cmmunis Williams
