Valerian is a rhizomatous herbaceous perennial that, in summer, produces tall, fragrant and melliferous flowering stems. Its foliage gives off an odour that attracts cats, hence its name "catnip". But it is mainly cultivated for its very aromatic roots, used for therapeutic purposes against nervousness.
Valerian likes partial shade, cool and humid soils, slightly calcareous. Plant it at the foot of trees or at the bottom of a flowerbed so that it stays cool.
Valerian is propagated by sowing or by dividing the clumps. The seeds are sown in spring, from April to May or in August-September, in a container or in open ground. The roots are harvested in autumn every 2 years.
Valerian leaves are used to make a vegetable manure. The dried roots are used in infusions or in the form of tinctures.
